You Are Not Your Thoughts

Who am I?

Most people think that they are in control of their thoughts, but this is simply not true. We do not wake up in the morning with a blank slate and carefully select the thought we will hold that day. Instead, thoughts flow into our minds from the second we wake up and we simply attach to them.

If we were able to choose our thoughts wouldn’t life look like an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet?

Just imagine it—you wake up in the morning and go down for breakfast—standing before you are trays and trays of thoughts.

Instead of choosing between eggs and croissants, you get to choose which thought you will consume today. Do you want to take a cup of positivity, or a cup of negativity? Will you choose the ‘everything is working out smoothie’ or the ‘life is hard and the worlds against me banana bread’?

If it were as easy as choosing good thoughts, wouldn’t they all be?

I knew of two sisters who couldn’t be more different. Although they grew up in the same house and the same environment, they were nothing alike.

Agatha would wake up in the morning with joyful expectation of what the day would bring. She would think about how lucky she was to have a job and drive to work knowing people would treat her well and appreciate the work she contributed.

Margaret, on the other hand, lived in a different world entirely. She hated going to work and despised the people she worked with. She expected things to go wrong and looked for people to tell them when it did—“See, I told you I wouldn’t get the job!”

Neither Agatha nor Margaret consciously chose their thoughts, but they did choose how they reacted to them. Now ask yourself, which one are you? Are you Agatha, who chooses to have a positive outlook regardless of the day or the perceived quality of life, or do you have a natural negativity that drives you through your day? Either way, you can detach from your thoughts by becoming more conscious—and we are going to show you how!
